Gaeilge ag Ollscoil Notre Dame

Roinn Theanga agus Litríocht na Gaeilge

Bunaíodh Notre Dame mar ollscoil Chaitliceach in 1842 i dTuaisceart Indiana in aice le Chicago. Faoi láthair tá breis is deich míle mac léinn ag staidéar san ollscoil (mic léinn iarchéime san áireamh) agus aithnítear í go forleathan mar cheann de na hollscoileanna is fearr sna Stáit. Tá an Ghaeilge á teagasc i Notre Dame ó 1868 nuair a thairg an Br. Simon ranganna den chéad uair. Thug Dubhghlas de hÍde cuairt ar Notre Dame, lean Éamon de Valera é i 1919 agus ba chuairteoir rialta é Séamus Mac Manus.

Bunaíodh Roinn Theanga agus Litríocht na Gaeilge, an t-aon roinn dá shórt sna Stáit Aontaithe, in Ollscoil Notre Dame i 2004. I dteannta leis an Ollamh Breandán Ó Buachalla, M.R.I.A. atá anois mar Thomas J. and Kathleen O’Donnell Chair of Irish Language and Literature, tá cúigear eile ar an bhfoireann ag teagasc na Gaeilge agus ag déanamh taighde i leabharlann Hesburgh ina bhfuil bailiúchán Gaeilge den scoth.  Tá leabharlannaí dhátheangach ar fáil chun cabhrú le scoláirí atá i mbun

taighde.  Ceapadh an Dr. Bríona Nic Dhiarmada i mbliana mar ollamh le Nua-Ghaeilge agus tá léachtaí tugtha ag an Ollamh Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh, ag an Ollamh Alan Titley agus ag an Ollamh Joseph F. Nagy mar aoichainteoirí le gairid.

Chun faisnéis sa bhreis a fháil, téigh go Gaeilge in Ollscoil Notre Dame.

Scoláireacht do Ph.D. sa Litríocht

Mar thoradh ar an dul chun cinn le tamall anuas agus an méadú suntasach ar líon na mac léinn a roghnaíonn an Ghaeilge mar ábhar bliain i ndiaidh bliana ag Notre Dame, tá deis anois do mhac léinn le Gaeilge dochtúireacht sa Litríocht a bhaint amach. Scoláireacht iomlán é seo do Ph.D. sa litríocht ina mbeidh an Ghaeilge mar phríomhábhar.

Gheofar gach eolas ag:
Ph.D sa Litríocht.  Ní ghlacfar ach le hiarratas ar líne don Ph.D. sa Litríocht.

Feirm Factor

Is é 'Feirm Factor' an chuid is fearr den chraic gur féidir a bheith agat agus tú ag dul thart ar chlós feirme, gan do bhuataisí a fháil amach!

Daoine Óga Ag Lorg Seirbhísí Gaeilge

Scéala tábhachtach istigh ónár gcairde i gConradh na Gaeilge is ea é seo.  "Níor fhreagair ach 2% de na daoine óga a ghlac páirt i gceardlanna cumasú Chonradh na Gaeilge an choicís seo caite go bhfógraíonn ranna agus comhlachtaí poiblí na seirbhísí Gaeilge atá ar fáil acu minic a dhóthain.  Dúirt 81% go lorgóidís seirbhís trí Ghaeilge uaireanta, go minic, an-mhinic nó i gcónaí amach anseo tar éis páirt a ghlacadh i gceardlanna an Chonartha.  Tá an Conradh ag moladh do dhaoine glacadh leis go bhfuil gach seirbhís ar fáil trí Ghaeilge agus an t-éileamh do sheirbhísí Gaeilge a léiriú. Má tá aon fhadhb agus seirbhís Gaeilge á lorg agat, is féidir an Conradh a chur ar an eolas trí ríomhphost a chur chuig glacleis@cnag.ie nó trí ghlaoch ar an Ard-Oifig ar 01 4757401 agus déanfaidh an fhoireann gach iarracht an scéal a chur ina cheart."  Chun eolas sa bhreis a fháil, téigh go dtí Daoine Óga Ag Lorg Seirbhísí Gaeilge.

Young People Want Services In Irish

This is important news in from our friends at Conradh na Gaeilge.  "Only 2% of the young people surveyed as part of Conradh na Gaeilge’s educational workshops a fortnight ago believe public bodies and departments advertise the services they provide in Irish enough. 81% also said that after participating in the Conradh’s workshops, they would sometimes, often, very often or always request services through Irish in future.  Conradh na Gaeilge is advising people to assume that every service is available through Irish and to illustrate the demand for services in Irish. If you have any problem getting services through Irish, you can inform the Conradh by sending an email to glacleis@cnag.ie or by calling the head office on 01 4757401 and staff will do all they can to resolve the situation."   For more information, go to Young People Want Services In Irish.

Léirmheas:  Féin-teagasc go hÉasca Péasca ar líne
Tá  a lán suíomhanna ar an idirlíon anois ag tabhairt cabhrach d'fhoghlaimeoirí.  Is ceann acu é Éasca Péasca.  Bíonn a dhéanmhas soiléir agus furasta a leanúint.  Bíonn a chomhaid fuaime glan agus so-chloiste.  Aon am nach n-oibríonn cnap "Seinn/Play," is féidir leat an comhad a íoslódáil chuig do ríomhaire chun é a chloisteáil ar aon chuma ar do thoil.  I mo bharúil féin, áfach, sílim go bhfuil an suíomh oiriúnach do mheánfhoghlaimeoirí agus daoine ag teacht ar ais chuig an teanga, ach nach bhfuil sé oiriúnach d'fhoghlaimeoirí den bhunleibhéal.  Leis sin ráite, sílim gur uirlis den scoth é.  Chun úsáid a bhaint as an suíomh seo, téigh go dtí Éasca Péasca.

Review:  Easy Peasy Self-Teaching on-line
There are lots of websites now on the internet giving help to beginners.  Éasca Péasca ('Easy Peasy') is one of them.  Its structure is completely clear and easy to follow.  Its sound files are clean and easy to hear.  Any time that a "Play" button doesn't work, you can download the file to your computer to hear it anyway whenever you want.   In my own opinion, however, I think that the site is suitable for intermediate learners and for people who are coming back to the language, but it is not suitable for learners who are at the beginning level.  With that said, I think that this is an excellent tool.  To use this website, go to   Éasca Péasca.

This is in from Félim Borland who sent the information to the on-line list Gaeilge-A.  Thank you, Félim!

A new Irish language magazine is now available at www.nosmag.com , and it's worthwhile to reprint these lines from its editors here: "When we decided to make available a lively, modern magazine for our language's worldwide community, the objective which was laid down was to have a positive, lightning effect on the world around us - to provide an entertaining service which would inspire our readers and confirm that the Irish language is alive and lively in the 21st century."

Also, don't be surprised if you see an article from our member Séamas Ó Neachtain in this issue of Nós.

Well done, a chairde.  Congratulations!

Ár mbuíochas lenár mball Gearóid Ó hAnnaidh as an bhfaisnéis shár-shuimiúil seo.

Tá foclóir sonraíoch curtha ar fáil ar an idirlíon le déanaí ag an Dochtúir Diarmuid Ó hAirt.  Chnuasaigh sé a bhfocail ó bhéaloideas Thír Chonaill, go háirithe ón mbéaloideas bailithe ag Seán Ó hEochaidh agus Seán Mac Meanman sna 1930í agus 1940í don Choimisiún Béaloideasa Éireann.  Bhailigh Seán Ó hEochaidh níos mó béaloideasa Éireannaigh ná aon duine eile riamh.  Is féidir teacht ar an bhfoclóir iontach seo ag Cnuasach Conallach .  Ar an suíomh céanna, feicfidh tú litreacha scríofa le Tomás Ó Criomthain ('an t-Oileánach') agus Seán Ó Caoimh.

Cnuasach Conallach - A Computerized Dictionary of the Irish of Donegal

Our thanks to our member Gearóid Ó hAnnaidh for this exceedingly interesting information.

A remarkable dictionary has recently been made available on the internet by Dr. Diarmuid Ó hAirt.  He collected his words from the folklore of Tír Chonaill ('Donegal'), especially the folklore gathered by Seán Ó hEochaidh and Seán Mac Meanman in the 1930s and 1940s for the Irish Folklore Commission.  Seán Ó hEochaidh collected more Irish folklore than any other person ever.  You can find this wonderful dictionary at Cnuasach Conallach .  On the same site, you'll also see letters written by Tomás Ó Criomthain ('the Islandman') and Seán Ó Caoimh.

Foclóir Uí Dhuinnín Ar fáil Ar Líne

Fuaireamar an fhaisnéis tábhachtach seo ó Ghearóid Ó Néill ar an liosta Gaeilge-B agus ónar mball Máire Mhic an Phríora.  Go raibh míle maith agaibh, a chairde!

Tá ceann de na foclóirí is fearr dár foilsíodh riamh ar fáil anois ar an idirlíon Foclóir Gaedhilge agus Béarla Uí Dhuinnín .  Ni gá ach clárú chun an focal atá uait a aimsiú. Tá griangraf de gach leathanach ann.  Is féidir zómáil isteach ar na focail nó is féidir focal a líonadh isteach i mbosca cuardaigh.  Tá sé go deas an seanchló agus an seanlitriú a fheiceáíl arís.  Éacht ar dóigh déanta ag na daoine in Ollscoil Luimnigh!  Comhghairdeas libh!   - Máire Mhic an Phríora

Focal ó An Gael

Tá Gaeilge beo in ollscoileanna Mheirceá Thuaidh

Cé go raibh suim mhór i Nua-Ghaeilge in ollscoileanna Mheirceá Thuaidh ag deireadh na naoú haoise déag agus ag tús na fichiú haoise, de ghnáth ní raibh aon Nua-Ghaeilge le fáil in ollscoileanna Mheirceá Thuaidh um lár na fichiú haoise.  Cinnte go raibh eisceachtaí tábhachtachta, mar Ken Nilsen agus a ranganna i Nua-Ghaeilge ag Harvard sna 1970í.  Ach, faraor, ní raibh ach Sean-Gaeilge agus Meán-Ghaeilge mar theangacha marbh in ndornán ollscoileanna eile, agus (go bhfios dom) ba é sin an scéal.

Mar sin, thit sé go príomha ar scoileanna cois claí nua-aimseartha an teanga a choimeád beo i Meiriceá Thuaidh ó lár na fichiú haois go dtí na 1990í.  Táim ag caint anseo faoi eagraíochtaí mar Chumann na Gaeilge Nua-Eabhraic (i Manhattan), Chumann Bhreandáin (i mBrúiclinn), Chumann Carad na Gaeilge / The Philo-Celtic Society (in áiteanna mar Manhattan agus Oileán Fada), Chonradh na Gaeilge (i mBoston, sa Bhronx, agus in áiteanna eile timpeall na tíre), agus níos déanaí eagraíochtaí mar An Claidheamh Soluis / The Irish Arts Center (i Manhattan agus Los Angeles), An Scoil Ghaeilge (i Manhattan), Daltaí na Gaeilge (ar fud na mór-roinne), Scoil Ghaeilge Ghearóid Tóibín (i mBablón, Oileán Fada, Nua-Eabhrac), agus araile.

Ag tógáil Scoil Ghaeilge Ghearóid Tóibín mar shampla, bunaíodh an scoil seo i 1988.  Thosaigh a múinteoirí le bun-ranganna agus meán-ranganna.  Ach céim ar chéim, chuaigh an scoil ar aghaidh go dtí go raibh (agus go mbíonn) ardcheardlanna á múineadh acu ar ábhair mar litríocht, sheanchas, bhéaloideas, amhránaíocht, mhiotas, agus stair na hÉireann, agus gach ardcheardlann acu teagasctha trí mheán na Gaeilge ó 1993.

Ar ndóigh, sin é an chaoi a bheith cinnte go bhfuil an teanga beo, má tá daoine á labhairt chun cúrsaí eile a phlé nó a fhoghlaim.  Agus anois, tá sár-áthas orm a thuairsciú go bhfuil an leibhéal forbartha seo céanna á shroicheadh go tapaidh ag ollscoileanna áirithe i Meirceá Thuaidh mar Choláiste Lehman-CUNY, a thosaigh a hInstitiúid an Léinn Ghael-Mheiriceánaigh i 2000, agus Ollscoil Notre Dame, a thosaigh a hInstitiúid Mhic Eochaidh an Léinn Éireannaigh i 1992 agus a Roinn Theanga agus Litríocht na Gaeilge i 2004.

I gColáiste Lehman-CUNY, is féidir leat IRI 300: Introduction to Literary Studies (Gaeilge ag CUNY) a thógáil ar líne trí mheán na Gaeilge. Agus ag Ollscoil Notre Dame, is féidir leat 60312.01 Clasaici na Gaeilge (Clasaicí ag Notre Dame) a thógáil trí mheán na Gaeilge.  Gan amhras go bhfuil forbairtí mar seo ar siúl nach bhfuil aithne againn orthu.  (Má tá, inis dúinn le do thoil!)

Ar aon chuma, mar a dúirt mé, má tá tú ag baint feidhme as Gaeilge, sin é an chaoi a bheith cinnte go bhfuil ár dteanga beo.  Mar sin, comhghairdeachas libh, a chairde!

(Ár mbuíochas leis an tOllamh Clare Carroll ag Coláiste Queens - CUNY a tharraing ár n-aird ar na forbairtí tábhachtacha seo.)

A Word from An Gael

Irish is alive in North American universities

Although there was a great deal of interest in Modern Irish in North American universities at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, usually there wasn't any Modern Irish to be found  in North American universities by the middle of the 20th century.  Certainly there were important exceptions, like Ken Nilsen's classes in Modern Irish at Harvard in the 1970s.  But, unfortunately, there was only Old Irish and Middle Irish as dead languages in a handful of other universities, and (as far as I know), that was it.

Therefore, it fell principally to modern hedge schools to keep the language alive in North America from the middle of the 20th century to the 1990s.  Here I'm talking about organizations like the New York Gaelic Society (in Manhattan), Cumann Bhreandáin (in Brooklyn), Cumann Carad na Gaeilge / The Philo-Celtic Society (in places like Manhattan and Long Island), Conradh na Gaeilge (in Boston, in the Bronx, and in other places around the country), and more recently organizations like An Claidheamh Soluis / The Irish Arts Center (in Manhattan and Los Angeles), An Scoil Ghaeilge (in Manhattan), Daltaí na Gaeilge (across the continent), Scoil Ghaeilge Ghearóid Tóibín (in Babylon, Long Island, New York), and others.

Taking Scoil Ghaeilge Ghearóid Tóibín as an example, this school was founded in 1988.  Its teachers started with beginning and intermediate classes.  But step by step, the school advanced until there were (and are always) advanced workshops being taught on subjects like literature, seanchas, oral tradition, the song tradition, myth, and the history of Ireland, with each advanced workshop taught through Irish since 1993.

Of course, that's the way to be certain that the language is alive, if people are speaking it to discuss or learn about other matters.  And now, I am extremely pleased to report that this same level of development is being reached quickly by certain universities in North America like Lehman College-CUNY, which started its Institute For Irish-American Studies in 2000,  and the University of Notre Dame, which began its Keough Institute for Irish Studies in 1992 and its Department of Irish Language and Literature in 2004.

At Lehman College-CUNY, you can take IRI 300: Introduction to Literary Studies (Gaeilge ag CUNY) on-line through the medium of the Irish language.  And at the University of Notre Dame, you an take 60312.01 Clasaici na Gaeilge (Clasaicí ag Notre Dame) through the medium of the Irish language.  No doubt there are other developments like this going on that we don't know about.  (If so, please tell us!)

At any rate, as I said, if you're using Irish, that's the way to be certain that our language is alive.  Therefore, congratulations, a chairde!

(Our thanks to Dr. Clare Carroll at Queens College - CUNY who brought these important developments to our attention.)
